Ed
Spielman is credited for creating a well received and acted American
television show; Kung Fu. The action western drama series aired to
the American public from 1972 to 1975 spanning a total of 3 seasons
and 60 episodes. The series was directed and produced by Jerry Thorpe
with development having been handled by H Miller; who also
co-produced and wrote for the show. The lead actor was famous
television veteran David Carradine who played Kwai Chang Caine’s,
character. The full length television pilot preceded the show and was
aired in 1972 as a ‘Movie of the week’ show on the ABC television
network.
The
plot of Kung Fu follows the mysterious and adventurous life of
Shaolin monk, Kwai Chang Caine who is played by David Carradine as an
adult, David’s half brother (think Dexter as special agent Frank
Lundy) Keith Carradine as the teenage Kwai Chang Caine, and Radames
Pera as Kwai Chang Caine as a young boy. The monk travels through the
reminiscent western towns of old America armed only with his fluid
martial art skills for combat and his spiritual training. The episode
follows Kwai Chang Caine as he attempts to find his half brother
Danny Caine. The beginning of the Shaolin Monk’s story starts when
his grandfather dies, after which his is accepted, an orphan child of
an American man and a Chinese woman, into a Chinese Shaolin monastery
for vigorous training. Kwai Chang Caine eventually grows to become a
Shaolin priest and a trained martial arts expert. In the beginning
episode, and the pilot, Master Po is murdered by the Chinese
emperor’s nephew; in an outrage, Kwai Chang Caine sought vengeance
by killing the emperor’s nephew. With an order against his life
because of his actions, Kwai Chang Caine is forced to flee china; it
is for this reason that he ends up in America.
In
the younger Kwai Chang Caine, the audience is introduced to the
Shaolin monk’s masters, the blind Master Po played by Keye Luke and
Master Kan played by Philip Ahn; the two a regular cast members
throughout the series. As David Carradine did not have much
experience in martial arts, the production team relied heavily on the
technical assistance of kung fu advisor David Chow and in subsequent
episodes Kam Yuen. David chow appeared in more than one occasion as a
guest star in the show.
